About the Author

Carolyn Ambler Walter, PhD, LCSW, is a professor at the Center for Social Work Education at Widener University, Chester, PA. Dr. Walter received her MSS and her Ph.D. from Bryn Mawr College, Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research. She received her B. S. degree in psychology from Juniata College. Dr. Walter has 40 years of experience in the field of social work, as a practitioner, teacher and author. She has had professional interests in grief, loss and bereavement for over 20 years. Dr. Walter has been a member of the faculty at Widener for 22 years where she has taught courses in the second year practice sequence, an elective course on grief and loss, an elective course on international issues and has taught courses about women's issues and human behavior. At Widener, Dr. Walter was elected as a member of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, was awarded the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, College of Arts and Sciences (1992-1993) and the Service Award for Contributions in Shaping the Center for Social Work Education (1997). Prior to teaching at Widener, Dr. Walter taught at the Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research at Bryn Mawr College and at the University of Maryland at Baltimore, School of Social Work and Community Planning. Within the larger community, Dr. Walter was selected as the recipient of the Woman of Achievement Award by The Girl Scouts of Delaware County in 1991.

Judith L. M. McCoyd is Assistant Professor at Rutgers University- School of Social Work. She graduated from Albright College with a Bachelors of Science (Individualized Study) in Biology-Social Welfare-Psychology in 1983. She had been interested in perinatal health care from a young age, volunteering her time at Booth Maternity Home for Unwed Mothers as a teen and continuing her volunteer work at Planned Parenthood throughout college. She graduated from Columbia University Graduate School of Social Work in 1985 (Health/Mental Health) and went on to work at Methodist Hospital in South Philadelphia in oncology, the emergency room and obstetrics, later working at Pennsylvania Hospital (the first hospital in the U.S.) in the Intensive Care Nursery, the Antepartum Unit and Obstetrics. She has been an active member of both the National Association of Perinatal Social Workers, recently serving as vice-president and co-chair of the Philadelphia Conference in 2009, and the Perinatal Social Work Network in Philadelphia where she was the coordinator in the early 1990's. She was certified by the Pennsylvania Society for Clinical Social Work Institute after their three year post-Masters training in psychodynamic psychotherapy.
